As I have discussed ina previous thread, only by practicing English speaking without any fear oflosing face can we really improve our oral English. In the past when there wasno Internet, many learners of English went to the English corner in auniversity to practice their oral English. Some learners were bold enough tospeak English to anyone else in the English corner whereas some simply shiedaway from speaking before others even in Chinese, their mother tongue, letalone in English. They just always stood there listening like a sculpture allthrough the time where they were in the crowd. However, it would be a greatpity if they might have had the desire to speak to practice what they hadlearned of spoken English when there was no one around. Now I haven’t been toan English corner for quite a while but I’m sure that in English corners, thereare still mute learners who, like their predecessors, stand listening, leavingthemselves in the cold amid the talking crowd.
What has caused these silent ones tosuppress their desire to speak out in a crowd where most people even don’t knowthem at all? I think that it may have been caused by their shyness and theirfear of losing face in face-to-face conversation in a foreign language. What ifI speak English with a very much distorted pronunciation? Will the person Ispeak to laugh at me without out showing it? What if I stutter all the time? Will the person get bored by me and cut short our conversation with resentment? What if my classmates or friends are nearby or in the circle of conversation? Willthey spread news about my poor performance in the English corner? Or what ifthe person thinks my English is so poor and never wants to talk to me againbecause he or she cannot benefit from our talk? Well, all those what-ifs canreally be true in an English corner where people talk to each other vis-à-vis. However, there are still a lot of benefits to be gained by joining an English corner.Otherwise, English corners will perish very quickly in an era of computers andsmart phones. But they haven’t. They are still there for a reason.
As a favorablealternative to English corners, online chatrooms have become very popular thesedays. They have some advantages that English corners can never catch up to.Firstly, in a chatroom, anonymity is indeed guaranteed. If you use a pseudonym, there is no way that anyone else can know who is under that false name. This islike staying in a crowd where everyone is wearing a mask. We have a word, ‘masquerade’,for such a party. Therefore, no longer do you need to fear losing face evenwhen you cry out loud in the crowd. A chatroom is a such a perfect place for amasquerade where you speak English without the slightest worry about how otherswill look at you. No one knows you or cares about how well you speak. So, in noway will you feel the embarrassment of losing your face. Secondly, the timerestriction is gone for good. English corners do have time limits. They areopen on only one or two days in a week and typically last no more than fivehours. Chatrooms break those limits and set no limits on time. You can speak inthe chatroom practically any time you like. Even better, with smartphones, youcan practice your spoken English on the go. Thirdly, with sea of chatrooms foryour choice, you no longer need to worry about how poorly you have been doingin a chatroom. If you feel uncomfortable in a chatroom, feel free to go and joinanother one. In the end, there will be always one that is to your heart’s content.Last but by no means least, you can keep records of what everyone says in thechatroom. That is a great advantage because you can look back at what otherssay. From the texts typed or spoken, you can always pick up something usefulfor improving your oral English. Vice versa. You need not take notes of whatothers say. Instead, the notes have been saved for you.
You may have been longin some chatroom for English chat or English speaking. If you’ve not joined anyEnglish chatroom, I suggest that you join one and start benefiting from yourcommunication with other people in English. Alternatively, a QQ chatroom hasbeen recently set up for those who are interested in practicing their oralEnglish on the go or simply releasing their passion for communicating withothers in English. By scan the following QR code in the attachment or search bythe QQ group number of 589015615. Just enjoy yourself and pick something up onthe way.
