An egalitarian society is regarded as one where people have equal political, economic and social rights. It is my belief that it is in an egalitarian society that people will enjoy the freedom of personal success or failure based on their individual merits.
An egalitarian society does not mean that people should be the same in every aspect of their social life. Instead, it means that people should have equal rights and chances which are key to their personal success or failure. First and foremost, in an egalitarian society people can have equal rights in education. After all, education is usually the starting point for personal achievements. Nowadays, if someone is barred from education, chances are that he or she will have little chance of personal success in the future. Secondly, in a society of equal rights, people have equal chance of getting employed. As we all know, employment is essential not only for making a living but also for achieving personal success. Of course, what kind of employment one gets depends on his or her personal merits. In turn, what kind of job one has a direct effect on how greatly he or she will succeed. Finally, an egalitarian society also provides equal access to other important social resources such as information and competition. These resources may not have a direct influence on personal success as education and employment do but they can influence the extent to which one can succeed.
To sum up, an egalitarian society is not in conflict with personal success or failure. On the contrary, it furnishes a social platform where people can enjoy equal rights and chances of access to the essential social resources for personal achievements.
